Job description Job responsibilities MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Service Management and Development Deliver a clinical pharmacy service to oncology, haemato-oncology and palliative care patients. Contribute to the development and delivery of the specialist clinical pharmacy service to oncology clinics. Undertake the role of Pharmacist Independent Prescriber within the clinical area setting of Oncology and in line with Trust policy, professional regulatory and national guidance. Maintain competence in prescribing according to level of prescribing qualification and participate in regular continuing professional development in relation to the role. Prescribe in accordance with the Trusts Medicines Management and Controlled Drug governance and management policies; Non-medical Prescribing Policy; The Royal Surrey County Hospital Formulary and other local and national prescribing guidance. Prescribe within the limits of their individual competence. Contribute to the development of pharmacist non-medical prescribing within the oncology specialty. Evaluate the contribution of Pharmacist Independent Prescribers within the Oncology Division. Contribute to the national cancer services peer review process as required. Responsible for clinically assessing and authorising one-off chemotherapy protocols in accordance with Cancer Network and Trust guidelines. Write Patient Group Directions for the administration of drugs by other disciplines including nurses and radiographers. Liaise with Consultant Oncologists for the preparation of new drug submissions to the Trust Drug and Therapeutics Committee. Participate in the maintenance and development of clinical pharmacy services to inpatients, day cases and outpatients in accordance with current policies and to provide leave cover for specialist oncology pharmacists when required. Support the provision of safe, evidence based, cost-effective prescribing of medicines used in oncology, haemato-oncology and palliative care patients. Participate in meetings or working groups for the development of clinical services or policies relating to oncology patients as determined by changing need or local or national directives. Assist with the development and implementation of a range of treatment guidelines and patient care pathways as required by the oncology MDT. Assist the Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Cancer, Aseptic and Research Services in the implementation and audit of local and national policies and standards including service guidelines and technology appraisals produced by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. Develop links with other healthcare staff to facilitate the sharing of best practice throughout the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance. Liaise with pharmaceutical company representatives and disseminating knowledge oncology developments to specialist oncology pharmacy colleagues. Liaise with medical nursing and other health professionals with respect to the correct prescribing and administration of chemotherapy drugs, and all other treatment or supportive medication used in the care of cancer (medical and surgical) patients, according to agreed regimens, protocols and policies. Liaise with senior nursing staff in Royal Surrey Cancer Centre clinical areas and the pharmacy stock control team, regarding the appropriate levels of stock drugs and maintenance of their cost-effective use. Work as part of a team, both within the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre Pharmacy, and as part of the multidisciplinary team caring for cancer patients, attending multidisciplinary meetings as appropriate.
