Frequently asked questions

What is the typical Band 7 pharmacist take-home pay?+

At the entry step (£46,148), take-home pay is approximately £32,500–£33,500 per year nationally (roughly £2,750/month). This accounts for 20% income tax, 8% employee NI, and NHS pension contributions at the 9.8% tier. London HCAS supplements increase gross pay but are taxed in the same way.

Do all Band 7 pharmacist jobs require an IP qualification?+

Not all, but the majority of advertised Band 7 roles now list independent prescribing as essential or strongly preferred. PCN pharmacist roles funded through NHSE almost universally require IP. Hospital Band 7 rotational roles may accept candidates working towards IP provided they complete it within a set timeframe.

How long does it take to progress within Band 7?+

The NHS AfC system moves you through Band 7 step points based on years in post: entry (0–2 years), mid (2–5 years), and top (5+ years). Progression is automatic on the anniversary of your start date, provided satisfactory appraisal. There is no accelerated progression within a band.

Can I negotiate my Band 7 starting step?+

In theory, NHS employers can start you at a higher step if your previous experience warrants it — this is called "matching" or "assimilation". In practice, many trusts default to the entry step. It is worth negotiating at the offer stage, especially if you have several years of equivalent Band 7 or senior Band 6 experience.
